JD (John Denver)
6 years old | 13.2hh | grade leopard appaloosa
$15,000
JD is a short but sweet ranch pony that has been a part of my herd the last few years. He's experienced all his "firsts" with me since I started him and kept him in my string since. He's experienced a lot. Covered lots of miles whether it was ranch work, trails, packing, photo shoots, etc. He walks out great for being the size he is, and does not get worn out easily. He can work all day. He's won of the hearts of many during his time with me, and certainly get's noticed.
He loads great, stands for the farrier, is always paying attention & willing to learn, great in the mountains/brush/cacti/snow/water. He's been a really incredible colt. He has most recently been on the Pitchfork Ranch down in WY where he's getting more roping experience. He is still pretty green to roping, but he's handled it very well. He had an odd fear of ropes that took a while to work through.
It was hard for me to decide to list him, but I ultimately think it's the best decision for both him and me. My ranch work has slowed down a lot since my accident last year, and he doesn't get ridden enough with me because of it. I would love to see him as someone's go-to mount for whatever discipline they pursue.
I would love to see him be a handy ranch kid's horse. Because of his age and current temperament, however, I will not sell him to a beginner, and I do not recommend that he be a kids horse unless they are handy and experienced. He is not rank or spooky, but he is at times watchy. He is also very soft and works off seat/leg, which is ideal for most, but I think he'd be too sensitive for a beginner rider.
He kicked one leg out on maybe his 5th ride and that is it. He's never bucked with a rider. When he sits in the pasture too much he gets buddy sour.
JD has great feet. I keep him barefoot unless I'm riding in a ton of rocky terrain. I have never had a lameness issue with him, or any health concerns. He is an easy keeper, sees an equine dentist once a year, and receives regular chiropractic.
While I've never tried it with him, I've also always thought he'd be an excellent breakaway horse or hunter/jumper prospect. If I don't find the right fit for him, I will keep him and get him started with breakaway.
He is currently in Riverton, WY for the next two weeks.
